Frequently Asked Questions About Therapy
It’s okay to have questions.
Starting therapy can come with a lot of unknowns, especially if you’ve never been before. Below are answers to some of the questions people commonly have about therapy, appointments, privacy, and getting started.
If you don’t see your question here, you’re always welcome to reach out.
About Therapy
-
Having supportive people in your life can be incredibly valuable. Therapy offers something a little different: dedicated time focused entirely on you with a trained professional who can help you understand what you’re experiencing, recognize patterns, consider new perspectives, and develop tools for meaningful change.
-
Yes. Medication and therapy can serve different purposes and are often used together. If you take medication or work with another healthcare provider, we can talk about how therapy fits into your overall care.
-
There’s no single timeline for therapy. Some people come to work through a specific situation, while others find that longer-term therapy better fits their needs.
We’ll check in along the way about your goals, progress, and whether therapy continues to feel useful to you.
Your Therapy Appointments
-
Your first session gives us a chance to get to know each other. We’ll talk about what brought you to therapy, what has been happening in your life, and what you’d like to be different.
You don’t have to tell your entire story in one appointment, and you don’t need to know exactly where to begin. We’ll start wherever you are.
-
Individual therapy sessions are approximately 50 minutes. Toward the end of our time, we may review what we discussed, identify anything you’d like to work on between sessions, and talk about next steps.
-
Many clients begin with weekly appointments, while others may meet every other week depending on their needs, goals, and circumstances.
We’ll decide together what frequency makes the most sense for you and adjust as your needs change.
-
That’s completely okay. You don’t need to arrive with a list of things to discuss or know exactly what you want to say.
Sometimes we begin with what has happened since your last appointment. Other times, we explore a feeling, thought, relationship, or experience that has been weighing on you. Part of my role is helping us find a place to begin.
Privacy, Payment & Getting Started
-
Yes. Protecting your privacy is an important part of therapy. What you share in counseling is generally confidential, with certain legal and ethical exceptions.
We’ll review confidentiality and its limits together before beginning therapy.
-
Yes. In-person therapy is available in the Monroe and West Monroe, Louisiana area, and telehealth appointments are available for clients located throughout Louisiana and Ohio.
-
Insurance and cash-pay options are available. Please contact me to discuss current insurance options and payment information before scheduling.
-
You don’t have to be completely certain before reaching out. Sometimes the first step is simply having a conversation, asking your questions, and deciding whether working together feels like the right fit.
There’s no expectation that you have everything figured out before you begin.
